I'm very particular about what decorations I put up on my walls.įor the last two years of college, I couldn't find anything I really liked, so I left them blank.Granted they started the business in the depths of the economic crash in 2007, which would could explain the slow start. I moved into my new apartment over half a year ago and only hung up three things, two of which have gone up in the past month. I'm particular because what you put on your walls, much like what you wear or how you carry yourself, tells the outside world a lot about you. I'd heard about the photo service Fracture years ago they've been talked about on a lot of my favorite podcasts. They've differentiated themselves by printing pictures directly onto a single pane of glass. The process puts less space between you and the artwork, and doesn't require a frame to hang.įor years, I'd hear podcast hosts talk all about how great their Fractures were, while I tried to find a picture I wanted on my wall. Well, I finally found one: A commissioned portrait by one of my favorite web comic artists, Sarah Andersen. I knew I wanted to print this out and put it on my wall, but it was special enough that I wanted to give it the Fracture treatment. The process of ordering a Fracture is similar to ordering a photo print through any other online service. You upload your photo, pick your size, and order. Fracture's upload tool does have some light editing tools, so if you want to make the photo gray scale, or give it a quick crop, you can. My favorite part of the upload tool is that it checks the resolution of your photo, and uses that to limit your max size. If the tool thinks your small photo is going to be a blurry mess at 3x its normal size, it'll gray that option out. It'll place an asterisk next to sizes it thinks are risky, too. You can order Fractures in traditional landscape and portrait sizes or square sizes, for those amazing Instagram photos. I don't use Instagram, but I think more photo services should support square-sized photos, if they don't already. Once ordered, your Fracture is handmade in Florida and sent. I ordered the largest size (21.6" x 28.8") and was a little worried about shipping. Once the box showed up, I realized that was misplaced anxiety. I've ordered products for years from so many vendors, and Fracture might have the best packaging I've seen. The picture itself was zip-tied between two pieces of cardboard that were suspended in the middle of another large box. It's safe to say the photo arrived completely unblemished, and even a little ahead of schedule. Hanging the Fracture was equally easy the glass is attached to a backing board that has a notch in it. Most of them were taken for the restraining order hearing, but the rest are of my children, wife, and various permutations thereof.Ī screw that comes in the box with the Fracture fits in perfectly all you have to do is find the perfect spot.I have a lot of photos. There are a number of these photos that I’d like to print out and save forever and there are a few I’d love to hang on my wall for posterity. That’s where Fracture comes in.įracture is one of the most interesting and novel ways of creating a beautiful and lasting piece of photographic art I’ve seen in a long while. Fracture, a two-year-old start-up founded by two friends, offers a fairly simple service – you send them a photo and you get back that photo printed on a pane of shatter-proof glass.
